Growing In Our Relationship with Jesus through Christology

There is possibly no more controversial or debated figure in history than Jesus of Nazareth. While a lot of people will agree that he was a good and moral man, others argue he was a profound prophet, and those of us who call ourselves Christians have held to the belief that he is those things and even more - that he is the Son of God, and God himself, in human form.

Having questions about Jesus isn’t a new concept. In fact, people began asking questions about Jesus and who he is even during his life on earth, and especially after his death and resurrection. On one occasion, Jesus even posed the question to his first followers —

"He asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’" - Matthew 16:13-16

For followers of Jesus, the Bible helps us better understand our faith by giving us a deeper understanding of the person our faith is based on. At LCBC, you’ve probably heard us talk about having a personal relationship with Jesus. Chances are you value it when people take the time to get to know you better, and our relationship with Jesus is no different. To grow our relationship with Jesus, we need to understand more about who he is and what he did by studying his life. Seeing how he is active in our world today will help us build a stronger faith and a closer relationship with him.

One of the tools we have to better understand and get to know Jesus is called Christology. The word "Christology" comes from two Greek words meaning "Messiah" and "word" - together they mean "the study of Christ." Christology is the study of the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Diving into Christology means better understanding subjects like Jesus' earthly birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension. It also studies topics like his eternal existence as part of the Trinity, his humanity and deity, how he fulfills prophecies from the Old Testament, and his future return and reign over his Kingdom.

This winter, you’re invited to join a new Group that will look more closely at the person and work of Jesus. Over six weeks, we’ll look at topics like if we can trust the sources that teach about Jesus, why his birth, life, and death matter, did he rise from the dead, what does it mean that he is coming back, and how should those who follow him live as a result of his life and work? If you’re interested in the answer to any of those questions, or just want to learn more about Jesus, get started by signing up through Group Finder!
