Coronavirus Update: Keep Being the Church

Posted on March 17, 2020

COVID-19 Update: On-site gatherings and activities are suspended through March 31.

A Message from David Ashcraft

Dear LCBC Family and Friends,

God is up to something big right now - it's as though he is recalibrating the entire world - our country - our communities - our church - and each of our lives - all at the very same time. And the challenge for each of us is how do we respond to this recalibration?

Around LCBC we’re one week into our new normal, and though things continue to change on a daily basis - and sometimes on an hourly basis - one thing remains the same - you and I continue to be the Church.

And though we are not currently gathering in our usual places, we are still the Church. Because the Church is not a place - the church is a people.

We were excited to have 15,000-20,000 of us gathered for Church Online this past weekend - and it was amazing to see where we are all located: we came from 561 different cities, 39 states, and far-away places such as Bangkok, Canada, Germany, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico. And we look forward to gathering together again this weekend.

So here’s our plan moving forward. What we know for sure is that all activities in our buildings have been suspended until March 31.  But you and I continue to be the Church. So over the next few weeks we are challenging each other - you and me - each and every one of us - to use these turbulent times to focus on our relationships.

First, let’s focus on our relationship with God. God is giving us the opportunity to see him in a brand new way - let’s not miss it. Now is the time to lean into God, not to push him away. Talk with him and listen to him daily - then be sure to gather for Church Online with us on the weekend as together we remind ourselves of the goodness of God.

Secondly - let’s rekindle our relationships with each other. Now is the time to lean in to each other - now is the time to stay connected with our families, Groups, or serving teams.

And third - today is the time to develop new relationships with our neighbors. Don’t wait until tomorrow - instead jump in right now. This week let’s all reach out to at least two neighbors. Maybe we are meeting them for the very first time - maybe it’s a re-introduction,  and simply ask the question, “How can I help you right now?” We might have to re-ask that question multiple times over the next few weeks - but keep asking. And remember, see a need - meet a need.

Let’s stay connected. If you have a question or a need - contact us. We’re available. Our phones are open during office hours. You can connect with us through email or via our social media channels.

To keep you informed of what is happening around LCBC, we plan to communicate with you each Tuesday - giving you the most up-to-date information we have. But perhaps the best way to stay current with us is by regularly checking LCBCchurch.com and by following us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @LCBCchurch.

Yesterday someone asked me how I was feeling about all these changes - and said I’m feeling fine - maybe even excited. And here’s why - I really believe that God is doing something big. Only God could pull off something like this - something that is changing our world, our country, our state, our communities, our church, us, you and me - all at the exact same time.

So let’s lean in to God and to each other - let’s be a good neighbor to the people around us - and let’s be the Church the way the Church is supposed to be - sharing the love of Jesus with all we come in contact with.

I am so glad that we are on this journey together - I’ll commit to praying daily for you during this detour - feel free to pray for me and each other as well.

See you for Church Online this weekend,

David
