Anxiety comes at us from all sides – we're bombarded by upsetting headlines and stressful social situations, all the while facing our own internal battles. The good news is we don't have to be a prisoner to our thoughts or captive to the stuff that keeps us up at night. There are all kinds of Bible verses for anxiety that can help go on the offense and attack it at its source.

In Ephesians 6:12, the Apostle Paul reminds us that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against things we can't see. He uses the imagery of armor to describe the way God equips us to protect ourselves against the lies anxiety tempts us to believe. One of these is actually used for offense instead of defense: the sword of the Spirit is how Paul describes the word of God and its role in spiritual warfare. In other words, the Bible can work like a weapon against our anxiety!

Using Scripture helps us declare God’s truth over our lives and recenters our hearts and minds. With that in mind, here are three scriptures for anxiety you can commit to memory. Don't settle for defense; get the upper hand.

3 Bible verses for anxiety

Deuteronomy 31:8

Whatever storm we’re facing, God already knows what’s on the other side. Not only that, but he’s also right there to walk through it with us. Whatever has you worried, know that God is with you. He won’t leave your side or abandon you in the middle of your struggle.

John 16:33

For followers of Jesus, we shouldn't be surprised when the circumstances of life aren't polished or perfect. We live in a broken world, and trouble is to be expected.

However, we aren't victims of our circumstances. We serve a living savior who died in our place and conquered even death itself. Even in the middle of our hardship, we know how the story ends: with perfect peace and a restored relationship with God, free of pain, anxiety, and even death.

Romans 8:38-39

Nothing can separate us from God's love. You are secure in your relationship with God. It's not based on your circumstances or your response to them. Salvation – your standing with God – is based solely on his radical and relentless pursuit of you. You can be confident that his love is constant and secure, even when life isn’t.
