Can people change? It’s a question lots of us wrestle with at some point or another. Whether you’re wondering if someone you know can turn their life around or if you’re hoping to see transformation in your own heart, the answer is a hopeful yes!

Can people change? Yes, but...

Here’s the catch: real, lasting change is possible – but it’s not something we can accomplish on our own. It’s made possible through redemption, grace, and the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit. We know that it’s only because of God that people can truly change, and that’s because the Bible shows us lots of examples of how that happened for other people.

The Apostle Paul

Paul was a known persecutor of Christians. But after experiencing the grace of Jesus, he became one of the most influential leaders in the early Church. You can read the story of when Paul met Jesus and his life and heart began to change in Acts 9:3-6. His letters make up a significant portion of the New Testament in the Bible, and his story shows that anyone can change when they encounter Jesus.

King David

David made some devastating choices during his life. One time, he got a married woman pregnant and had her husband murdered so no one would find out what happened. (And that’s just one mistake he made!) But, when confronted with his sin, David turned back to God in repentance. He was described in the Bible as “a man after God’s own heart,” not because he was perfect, but because he was willing to let God shape him (Acts 13:22).

The Apostle Peter

Peter went from being a brash, impulsive fisherman who denied knowing Jesus three times to becoming a bold and faithful leader in the early Church. After Jesus rose from the dead, Peter was restored by Jesus (John 21:15-17) and empowered by the Holy Spirit. His transformation is evident in his fearless preaching and leadership, even when he faced persecution.

These stories remind us that change is possible – no matter how far gone someone may seem. But it’s not just about behavior modification; it’s about the heart.

The Holy Spirit changes us

How does real change happen? It starts with the Holy Spirit. When we trust Jesus and invite him into our lives, the Holy Spirit begins to work within us, guiding us, convicting us, and producing what the Bible calls the fruit of the Spirit:

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" Galatians 5:22-23.

These aren’t traits we can just will ourselves to have. They grow in us as we spend time with God, listen to his voice, and allow the Holy Spirit to change our hearts. The change may be gradual, and there will be ups and downs, but over time, people will begin to see the evidence of God’s work.

How to receive the Holy Spirit

If you’re longing for change and wondering where to start, it begins with trusting Jesus and receiving the Holy Spirit. Here’s how:

  • Admit that you need Jesus. Change starts when we admit that we’ve made mistakes, and that we need Jesus to save us from our sin – we can’t do it alone (Romans 3:23).
  • Believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins (Romans 5:8).
  • Choose the gift of forgiveness and new life (Romans 10:9). When you do this, you’re not just inviting Jesus into your life – you're surrendering control and trusting him to lead you.

By taking these steps to trust Jesus, you will receive the Holy Spirit. As you take steps to grow in your relationship with Jesus – like reading the Bible, praying, and surrounding yourself with other believers who can encourage you – you'll experience the transformation of the Holy Spirit.

Live a life changed by Christ!

So, can people change? Definitely! But it’s not about trying harder or being better – it's about experiencing and receiving the grace of Jesus and allowing the Holy Spirit to change you from the inside out. No matter who you are or what you’ve done, God’s love is greater. And with him, real, lasting change is always possible.
