Have you ever stopped to think about why you believe what you believe?
Our personal beliefs shape how we see the world, make decisions, and interact with others. But those beliefs don’t form in a vacuum. They’re shaped by all kinds of external influences, seen and unseen.
As followers of Jesus, we have the opportunity to build our beliefs on a foundation that is steady and true – God’s truth – rather than what’s fleeting or uncertain (Romans 12:2). Let’s take a closer look at the biggest influences on what we believe and how aligning with God’s wisdom can lead to a life of clarity, confidence, and purpose:
The 6 biggest influences on your personal beliefs
1. Family and upbringing
From a young age, we absorb the values and perspectives of the people who raised us. Parents, guardians, and family traditions have a significant impact on how we see the world. What we learn as children often sticks with us as adults.
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
But not everything we inherit from our families is true or good. As we grow, we have the chance to build on what is good and refine what doesn’t reflect God’s heart. Jesus often invited people to see beyond traditions and embrace a deeper understanding of God (Matthew 15:3-9). In the same way, we can lean into God’s wisdom as we shape what we believe.
2. Culture and society
We’re constantly bombarded with messages about what’s “normal” or “acceptable.” Social media, movies, news, and music all shape our perspectives. Sometimes we don’t even realize it’s happening.
When culture moves in different directions, we have a firm foundation to stand on. Rather than feeling pressured to follow trends, we can confidently build our lives on the truth that never changes. Daniel did this well – he navigated life in a foreign culture while remaining deeply connected to God (Daniel 1:8).
3. Education and knowledge
Our education and experiences expand our understanding of the world. Knowledge is a gift, but it becomes most valuable when viewed through the lens of God’s wisdom.
As we learn, we can ask God for wisdom and discernment. Paul did this when he engaged with scholars and philosophers, using what he learned to point others toward God (Acts 17:16-34). The more we seek truth in God’s Word, the more we can see the world through his eyes.
4. Personal experiences and emotions
Every joy, hardship, success, and challenge shapes how we see the world and God’s role in our lives. Sometimes, these moments draw us closer to him. Other times, they leave us with questions.
Our feelings are real, and they’re a part of how God created us. But they aren’t always reliable. If we’re not careful, we can base our beliefs on emotions rather than truth. Jeremiah 17:9 cautions that “the heart is deceitful above all things,” but when we root our beliefs in God’s truth, we gain a steady foundation even when times are turbulent.
5. Friends and relationships
As the saying goes, “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” Our friendships and relationships can either encourage us toward truth or pull us away from it. As Proverbs 13:20 puts it, “walk with the wise and become wise.”
Surrounding ourselves with people who seek God’s wisdom helps us grow in faith. Being part of a strong, faith-filled community strengthens us and keeps us focused on what matters most. A great way to do that is by joining a Group at LCBC!
6. Spiritual beliefs and faith in God
Above all else, God’s Word is the most trustworthy source of truth. His guidance never changes, and his promises are always secure.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16
Through prayer, the Holy Spirit helps guide our beliefs and decision-making. John 16:13 tells us that the Holy Spirit “will guide you into all truth.” A great way to build a solid foundation of truth that’s rooted in faith is by doing things that will help you get closer to God: things like praying, reading the Bible, and going to church regularly.
How to align your beliefs with truth
We’ve talked a lot about why it’s important to root your beliefs in truth – but how do you do that? Here are some great places to start:
- Compare your beliefs to Scripture: Ask yourself, “Does this belief align with what God says in the Bible?”
- Surround yourself with truth-seekers: Stay connected with others who will challenge and encourage you in truth.
We are shaped by so many influences – but not all of them lead us toward what is good, lasting, and true. The good news is we don’t have to navigate this alone. When we intentionally build our beliefs on God’s wisdom, we gain clarity, confidence, and a deeper sense of purpose. His truth provides a steady foundation in a shifting world, and when we seek him, we discover a life filled with direction and hope.
