Have you ever felt lost? We’re not talking about taking a wrong turn on the GPS – we mean deeply, overwhelmingly, philosophically lost. Maybe you aren’t where you thought you’d be in life at this point, or you don’t know who you really are deep down. Maybe you feel far from God.

It can be overwhelming and disorienting, leaving you unsure of which direction to take. What do you do when you feel lost in life and have no clue where to turn?

What to do when you feel lost in life

A key ingredient to rediscovering your identity and sense of direction is persistence. Jesus reminds us to “keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7).

Notice that Jesus doesn’t say “Try asking around a little, knock on a few doors – but if you don’t get anywhere, then you’re out of luck.” He encourages us to be tenacious, unwavering in our journey to overcome feeling lost and confused about our purpose in life

Here are some practical ways to rediscover who you are and who God created you to be:

Acknowledge Your Feelings

There are all kinds of situations that can make you question who you are and why you’re here. Recognize that feeling lost is a normal part of the human experience, and it doesn't mean there's something inherently wrong with you.

When you feel lost in life, it's important to acknowledge and accept your emotions. Try journaling your thoughts and feelings or talking to God about them. By allowing yourself to feel and process your emotions, you create space for healing and growth.

Reflect on Your Values and Passions

When you’re feeling directionless, it can be helpful to take inventory of the things that make life special for you. Consider what truly matters to you and what brings you joy. Ask God to show you the unique interests and passions he created you with, and invite him to reveal his purpose for your life.

Reflecting on these aspects can help you gain clarity about God’s plan and purpose for your life and give you a new sense of motivation and purpose.

Seek Support and Guidance

Feeling lost can be an isolating experience, but remember that you don't have to navigate it alone. Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or mentors who can provide support and guidance.

Sharing your thoughts and concerns with someone you trust can provide a fresh perspective and help you gain insights you may have overlooked. A Group is a great way to build a support system and get helpful perspective from others. You may also find it helpful to talk to a pastor or counselor – let us know if you need help finding one

Explore New Opportunities and Experiences

Embrace the unknown by exploring new opportunities and experiences. Engaging in activities outside your comfort zone can lead to self-discovery and personal growth. God created each of us with unique skills and passions, and figuring out how to use them can infuse your life with new meaning and purpose.

Try new hobbies, attend workshops or seminars, or consider volunteering for a cause that resonates with you. Opening yourself up to new experiences can help you uncover hidden talents and interests.

Bible verses for when you feel lost

Ultimately, when we’re lost and looking for wisdom and direction, the best place we can go is the Bible. The word of God gives us so much advice and encouragement for situations like this! Check out some key Bible verses for when you feel lost:

Whenever you feel lost in life, turn to these Bible verses. Take a screenshot, write them down somewhere, or commit them to memory and remind yourself about what God says about you. Remember, with God you’re never truly lost!

We all go through seasons where we feel lost. But the good news is we’ve been found by the only one who’s able to find us. Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed and directionless, all you need to do is ask God, seek his wisdom, and keep knocking on the door of scripture to rediscover who you were made to be.
