Most of the Proverbs were written by Solomon. 1 Kings 4:32 tells us Solomon spoke 3000 proverbs and, according to Proverbs 25:1, Hezekiah compiled them into the book of Proverbs. Proverbs teach wise behavior but are not promises from God. In other words, although it is a good idea to take the advice from Proverbs, the outcomes stated are not guaranteed.
These chapters say wisdom begins with fearing God. It also advises us to pursue wisdom by listening to those who are looking out for our best interests and to avoid those who would lead us into sin.
It’s funny how our best interests can look pretty boring, while walking on the wild side looks exciting. Wisdom cries out for us to consider God’s view on our behavior and the consequences of our choices. The invitation of the adulterous woman sounds tempting, but the consequences could be devastating!
