The story of Isaac and Rebekah seems like it came from a movie. Abraham sends his trusted servant on a journey to find a wife for his son Isaac. He travels through the desert, waves of heat rising from the sand. A beautiful young woman comes into view through the haze as he approaches.
The servant asks her for a drink and she obliges, proving her character to be generous and kind. Not only that, but also hard-working, willing to draw for the camels to drink as well.
This could be the girl! But the servant asks her a very important question: “Who’s daughter are you?” If this were the wife God promised for Isaac, she would be a descendant of Abraham’s family. She replies that she is a descendant of Nahor, one of Abraham’s brothers! The servant follows the woman, Rebekah, home to meet her father and brother, and the negotiations for marriage begin.
But the movie doesn’t end there. The servant and Rebekah return to Abraham, and Rebekah and Isaac finally meet. The promised son is now married, and God’s promise is fulfilled! God had vowed Abraham would have descendants through his promised son, Isaac. In this beautiful scene, God has once again lived up to that promise.
God doesn’t always answer our prayers exactly how we ask, but his plan is always good and perfect. God is trustworthy and dependable. No matter what you’re facing today, will you talk to God about it?
Prayer: Dear God, help me to remember that your plan is perfect. Even when it looks impossible, you will answer and guide me. The answers might not look the way I expect, but you are still good. Amen
