But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. Romans 6:22
For almost all humans, personal freedom is paramount. We love the freedom to make our own decisions and choose our own path. Contrary to what we may believe, though, we may not actually be "free." Each of us is a slave to another tyrant who demands their interests be met every day. We work tirelessly until those needs are filled and refilled. This person is not a dictator or demanding boss, the person may actually be you! Each of us is a slave to ourselves. Consider that in any given week, you make thousands of decisions based on what you want. We have a tough time depriving ourselves, and so we make good and bad decisions every day out of self-interest.
As followers of Jesus, our desires should be centered around becoming more like him. How many of us would deny that if Jesus made our decisions, life would be better? How many relationships in your life would be restored? How many good habits and gestures would be accomplished? How many of us would go to sleep at night with more peace? Putting Jesus on the throne of our lives will not always be easy, but it will be a blessing to ourselves and those around us.
Prayer: Today, Jesus, I acknowledge that I have been living for myself. Please help me to put you first and make your desires my own as well. Amen.
