Have you ever been in a new group of people – perhaps at work, at school, a new Bible study group – and played an ice breaker game? Love them or hate them, ice breakers help us get to know other people by sharing about ourselves.
We all want to be known. The God of the universe wants us to know him, too. The entire Bible is God’s love letter to us, his children who believe in the saving work of Jesus for our salvation from sin. Throughout the Bible, God tells us who he is. He shows us his character so that we can know what kind of God he is. Not the fickle and ever-changing gods of ancient Greece and Rome. Not the demanding gods of money, power, and popularity. He is the God who never changes, keeps his promises, and saves his people.
And just like we’d pick words to describe ourselves for an ice breaker game, God chooses to use different words for himself. In fact, he uses more than thirty words in Scripture to describe himself. Over the next few days we’ll look at fifteen of them, but Exodus 3 is a good place to start. Who is God? He is the one who has always existed, is never changing, and he wants us to know who he is. He tells Moses, “Tell them I AM who I AM.”
Prayer: God, you are the God of the universe, the God who loves me and saved me through the sacrifice of Jesus. Help me to know you better, so that my faith will grow and so that I introduce other people to you and then together we’ll fully follow you. Amen.
