Raising a family can be costly but having fun together doesn’t have to be! You can still connect over shared experiences and make lasting memories without paying top dollar. Here are some low-cost ways to have fun as a family:

Go local

You don’t need to hop on a plane or take a long road trip to have a memorable family experience. Check out your city’s website to see if any festivals or events are coming up nearby. Your local library is a great resource, too! You can find more than just books – libraries often have movies, music, and more available to borrow. Many libraries also host interesting classes and events the whole family can enjoy. You may even be able to snag a voucher to visit a museum!

Get outside

It doesn’t cost anything to lace up your sneakers and step outside! Hit the trails together with a hike or a family bike ride, or keep it low-key with a picnic lunch in the park. If you live near a state park, check out their website to see if they offer lake swimming during the warmer months. They’re often free to access, and you can get a little taste of the beach a lot closer to home!

Stay home

There are tons of creative ways to have fun as a family without leaving the house. You can camp out in the backyard or cozy up in a blanket fort and watch a movie. Cooking together is a great way to connect, too. Pick out a meal to prepare together, and give everyone a part of the recipe to complete. If your family likes a little friendly competition, give everyone a challenge to make the best dish using only ingredients you already have at home. If arts and crafts are more your style, make homemade cards to mail to friends and family near and far for an upcoming holiday or “just because!”
