In the Sermon on the Mount, there are several times when Jesus contrasts the way that people thought about God's Law against what he was truly focused on.
For example, Jesus wasn't just concerned about if someone killed someone. He's concerned with anger. He's not just concerned with adultery, he's also trying to move us away from lust. And he's not even just hoping we pray, he wants to make sure our motives are pure in that.
Jesus looks beyond the outward and looks inward at the condition of the heart. Have you surrendered your heart to him?
